Fighter jets have cut through the clear blue skies in Beijing last week for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Victory Day Parade. The rare sight was not military hardware but the colour of the sky.

Normally heavy, toxic smoke fills the air in Beijing. For all its military valor, the political parade was a symbol of power. The government’s pollution control measures worked to ensure blue skies on the Parade day. President Xi shut down thousands of factories and cut down the traffic. Although restrictions were temporary, this brought about changing things in Beijing.
