Legarda: Coal-fired power plants threat to lives, environment

CLARK FREEPORT - Senator Loren Legarda has renewed her call on government to tap cleaner and less wasteful sources of energy, expressing alarm over the adverse environmental impacts of coal-fired power plants in the country.

Legarda, chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change, lauded the Aquino administration's order to agencies of government to review the country’s energy policy, which may see the Philippines moving away from carbon-intensive coal power generation.

Stop Sasa port dev't project, SC urged

AS THEY stood firm in their stance against the P18.99-billion Davao Sasa Port Modernization Project (DSPM), a Private-Public Partnership (PPP) project in Mindanao led by the PPP Center and the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), concerned citizens and resort owners in Davao City asked the Supreme Court (SC) to stop the multi-billion project.

The group asked the SC to issue a “Writ of Kalikasan” to stop the DOTC from implementing the project.

Air quality monitoring station up in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, February 1 (PIA) – Pollution levels in San Fernando City can now be measured with the establishment of an air quality monitoring station at the Camp Brigadier General Oscar Florendo in barangay Parian here.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Environment Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) in partnership with the Philippine National Police and the San Fernando City government will unveil the facility on on Feb. 11.

MOA for second Sual plant signed

SUAL, Pangasinan: The establishment of a second power plant in Sual town will become a reality following the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between proponent Trans Asia Oil and Energy Development Corporation and the local government of Sual.

The MOA for the 900-megawatt (MW) power plant was signed by Francisco Viray Jr., president and chief executive officer of Trans Asia Oil, and Mayor Roberto Llamas Arcinue on Friday at the municipal hall.

DOE tells Semirara to resume coal-operating contract

The Department of Energy (DOE) has informed Semirara Mining and Power Corp. of the conditions it has set for the lifting of the suspension order against the latter’s coal operating contract.

“The investigation committee has already submitted and I wrote Semirara informing them of the findings,” DOE Officer in Charge (OIC) Zenaida Monsada said.

Monsada said the investigating committee, headed by Energy Undersecretary Donato Marcos, has recommended that Semirara strictly submit a three-year plan of operations and hire a technical consultant, among others.

Crime Suppression Division commander Pol Maj Gen Akradej Pimolsri said Monday that Joel Reyes, 63, former governor of Palawan province, and his brother, Mario Reyes, 54, a former municipal mayor in the same western province, were apprehended Sunday following a tip from Interpol.

Environmental compliance certificate covering Semirara mine suspended

It was the latest blow to Semirara, whose coal mining operations were earlier halted by the Department of Energy in the wake of a mine collapse incident last July 17.

On Friday, the listed miner told the exchange it is the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) in Quezon City that issued a suspension order this time.

DENR to suspend Semirara environment certificate

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will suspend the environmental compliance certificate (ECC) issued to the Semirara coalmine project following the landslide incident that resulted in the death of nine coal miners.

DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones said the suspension is to ensure that such incidents will not happen again.
