Vice minister pledges more efforts to improve air quality

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Environmental quality is the only criterion to measure the performance of the environment watchdog, Vice Minister for the Environment Pan Yue said on Monday, vowing to further reduce air pollution.

To improve air quality, environment regulators should not only focus on reducing emissions of major pollutants but all polluting discharge, Pan said in an interview.

"There are many factors that have an influence on air quality, therefore, total emission regulation is needed," he added.


China reverses anti-pollution law that kept vehicles off road

Local governments in China will no longer be able to restrict or ban vehicles from plying on the road to keep its air clean, according to a new amendment introduced on Saturday to the central law that governs anti-pollution efforts.

Governments in major cities like Beijing – notorious for high levels of air pollution -- have used the system of registration plate numbers -- odd and even -- to restrict some vehicles on plying on certain days.
