KUALA LUMPUR: It could take up to 20 years to remove contaminants from bauxite mining in Kuantan, Pahang.
Association of Water and Energy Research (AWER) Malaysia president S. Piarapakaran based the assessment on washed-up dead cockles along the shores of Pantai Pengorak, as well as mounds of bauxite deposits, which reached as far as Kuantan Port and Tanjung Gelang, more than 25km away.
“It is not impossible to treat the water but it may take decades to flush out the contaminants as plants and fish also absorb them.
