Mesco closes in on gold licence

After an unexpectedly lengthy review, the Ministry of Environment has approved the environmental and social impact study of Indian mining firm Mesco Gold, clearing the last major hurdle for the company to receive a licence to operate the Kingdom’s first royalty-generating mine.

“The Ministry of Environment has given its approval for underground mining over a 12 square kilometre area,” Rajeev Moudgil, director of Mesco Gold (Cambodia) Ltd, said yesterday.

Mahidol uni says mine test results incomplete

Mahidol University's Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies has defended its study on the impact of a gold mine in Phichit, saying the results disclosed by the mining operator are not yet complete.

The university's research team said yesterday it had worked with toxicologists to examine the blood and urine of villagers in the area for manganese and arsenic contamination after reports that the mine was proving toxic to workers and the environment.

Prayut urged to act on gold mine

PEOPLE LIVING near a gold mine in the central north are calling for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to urgently intervene after hundreds of villagers were found to have heavy-metal contamination.

Wunpen Promrungsun yesterday submitted a petition to Prayut yesterday on behalf of those affected by the Akara Resources gold mine.

The petition calls for Prayut to order the Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) and Rangsit University to jointly conduct tests on local people in three provinces who fear they have been affected - Phichit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun.
