Cambodians oppose Lao dam

Cambodians staged a protest Thursday to share the concerns of more than a quarter of a million people who are calling on Laos to suspend construction of the Don Sahong hydropower project on the Mekong River.

At the protest Chhith Sam Ath, country director of the World Wide Fund for Nature, said Don Sahong Dam, a 260-megawatt hydropower project, could bring about the demise of important fisheries and critically endangered Mekong dolphins.


Environmentalists accuse govt of inaction on Sethusamudram project

Environmentalists yesterday expressed regret over the country’s failure to address its concerns over the controversial Sethusamudram Project. They accused state officials of years of inaction on the issue.

According to them, the National Aquatic Resources Agency (NARA), Coast Conservation Department (CCD), Fisheries Department and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry were the responsible authorities who had not yet addressed the issue even though it arose eight years ago.


Thailand water diversion project under fire

Activists have voiced their opposition to Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi's plan to divert water from the Salween and Mekong rivers to feed the water-starved Northeast. The proposed projects are not the right solution to the drought problem in the region, they said.

Mr Plodprasop, who chairs the government's Water Management and Flood Prevention Commission, said last week that the body is considering three options to increase the water supply in northeastern provinces, which have long suffered from shortages, especially in the annual dry season.
