Opinion: India’s Environment at Risk

The Supreme Court of India acted wisely to protect both the nation’s democracy and environment in a landmark decision last week that orders the government to scrap 214 coal mining concessions. Among the cancellations is a concession granted to Essar Energy and its Indian partner, Hindalco Industries, in the Mahan forest in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Local communities had fought bitterly to block the mine, which they feared would destroy large tracts of the forest where they live.

Academic panel to review dam report

A GOVERNMENT-assigned academic panel has been assigned to look into the environmental impact of the Mae Wong dam in Nakhon Sawan, after environmentalists raised eight points of concern over the project's environmental and health impact assessment (EHIA) report.

Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) said it would halt plant to construct the dam, now listed under the government's Bt 350-billion water and flood management scheme.

A review on public participation in EIA in Malaysia

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was introduced to measure the benefit or cost from physical development to the public and community. In Malaysia, EIA was initiated in 1988 as a mandatory legislative requirement to protect and enhance the quality of the environment through licensing, setting of standards, coordination of research and dissemination of information to the public. Public involvement in assessment period is vital, and this conceptual paper identifies that there are three levels of participation in EIA.

Mekong-Kampong Cham Bridge - EIA critical review

This case study critically evaluates the comprehensiveness and quality of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) completed for the Mekong- Kampong Cham bridge in Cambodia. Course participants will have the opportunity to consider potential environmental impacts of this type of infrastructure project during both the construction and operational phases and to evaluate how EIA findings supported decision making related to the project.
