Green groups in Philippines ask Canada to 're-export' toxic waste

An online petition urges Canada to hasten the “re-exportation” of some 50 container vans of toxic garbage smuggled into the Philippines last February.

“Canada pick up your garbage! Philippines is not your trash can,” the petition initiated by environmental and civil society groups read.

“The 50 container vans, until now, are left in the vicinity of the Bureau of Customs (BOC). The garbage juice are now leaking and pose extreme health hazards and irreversible environmental problems in the country,” it said.


Malaysia: Ministry uncomfortable about illegal land clearing

The recent land clearing activities at Mount Santubong for the proposed cable car project might negatively impact the surrounding environment and hence the tourism sector.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk James Dawos Mamit said yesterday his ministry was “uncomfortable” about the illegal land clearing as the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and project feasibility were not yet concluded when clearing work started.
