Six lane track from Enderamulla to Ambepussa

The preliminary work on the first phase of the proposed Northern Expressway from Enderamulla to Ambepussa will begin before the end of this year.

Ports and Highways Project Minister Nirmala Kothalawala said the first phase of the project from Enderamulla to Ambepussa will have six lanes.

Rathupaswala test results sent for final report

A Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) spokesman said the laboratory tests on soil, mud and water samples in Rathupaswala were concluded last Monday, and the results were sent for the compilation of the final report.

Investigations on the cause of water pollution in Rathupaswala were carried out by GSMB on the direction of Environment and Renewable Energy Ministry and on a court order.

EIA review: Challenges for environmental impact assessment in Sri Lanka

Salient features in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process in Sri Lanka have proven to be the provision for public participation, the requirement of alternative proposals, and the use of a prescribed list to identify projects that must undergo review. While EIA has been successfully introduced and over 500 projects have been reviewed, some significant shortcomings remain. Integrated government policies on the types of projects that are encouraged in various zones are needed. Environmental data and effluent standards are insufficient.

This document is the summary environmental impact assessment (SEIA) of the findings of the 2005 and 2006 environmental assessments for the Southern Transport Development Project: (i) Supplementary Environmental Assessment (SupEA) and (ii) EIA of Expansion to 4 Lanes (St2EIA). The SEIA is presented to streamline the disclosure of two very closely related and overlapping documents, which have a common environmental background. The SEIA was prepared following the Environmental Impact Assessment Guidelines (2003) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Colombo-Katunayake Expressway Project: Selecting development options through environment-based planning approaches

Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka, situated on the West Coast of the country. The proposed high-speed road link is between Colombo City and Katunayake, the location of the international airport, which is situated about 25 km north of Colombo. The project would fulfil a long-felt need not only to facilitate passenger and freight movements between the two points, but also to ease the traffic from and to the northern part of the country.

CENTRAL ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORITY
AN ACT TO ESTABLISH A CENTRAL ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORITY TO MAKE PROVISION WITH RESPECT TO THE POWERS, FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF THAT AUTHORITY ; AND TO MAKE PROVISION FOR THE PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND FOR MATTERS CONNECTED THEREWITH OR INCIDENTAL THERETO.
Act No. 47 of 1980.
1. This Act may be cited as the National Environmental Act, and shall come into operation on such date as the Minister may appoint by Order published in the Gazette.
