Development projects being pushed under Section 44 of the interim charter will not be allowed to go ahead without meeting strict environmental standards, the government has pledged.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Surasak Karnjanarat said he will not waive the requirement for megaprojects to undergo environmental impact assessments or environmental and health impact assessments.
Gen Surasak made the comments on Friday after environmentalists warned the use of Section 44 gives the government free reign to avoid assessments as it tries to accelerate development work.
