Highways endorsed without consultation, say consumer groups

Date of Release:

“It is disconcerting that the road projects that may have significant environmental impacts and affect the wellbeing of the people near the routes are being endorsed without proper public consultation,” said CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris in a statement released today.

The three road projects – North Coastal Paired Road Tanjung Bungah-Teluk Bahang; Air Itam-Lebuhraya Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu By-Pass; and Persiaran Gurney–Lebuhraya Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu By-Pass – involve routes through residential areas, commercial areas, hills and areas of public interest.

The EIA consultant studying the socio-economic impact of the Penang Major Roads and Third Link had conducted a focus group discussion with CAP and SAM on August 28 with the aim of getting our views of the proposed projects.

CAP and SAM had voiced our objections to the proposed road projects under Phase 1A Package 1, 2, 3 and the undersea tunnel project in Phase 1B Package 4 , on environmental and social grounds and the lack of need for the projects.
