RAYONG -- Residents of Nong Faeb in tambon Map Ta Phut have put up banners and signboards showing their opposition to PTT Plc's plan to lay a 5th natural gas pipeline through their community.

They argue that PTT's plan routes the 5th natural gas pipeline through the heart of Nong Faeb community, near schools, a temple and along a railroad parallel with the existing 4th pipeline.

One angry resident, who asked not to be named, said the pipeline was planned in conjunction with the construction of a sea port, gas storage facilities and factories near the community. For residents it would be like living in the middle of a cluster of live bombs, he said.

"We are already living in fear. Recently, an explosion occurred at a factory, followed by a fire, late in the night. The factory management has still not explained to us what happened," he said.

PTT had called a meeting with Nong Faeb residents three months ago to explain the pipeline route. The villagers opposed the plan, arguing that they were already exposed to enough risks to their safety.

They had still not received any response to their opposition, prompting them to put up signboards and banners stressing the point that they do not want the pipeline, he said.

The 5th pipeline is designed to carry natural gas at up to 2,000 million cubic feet per day through nine provinces - Rayong, Chon Buri, Chachoengsao, Prachin Buri, Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi and Nakhon Pathom.

The natural gas will be supplied to power generating plants and for use in the industrial and transport sectors.
