Pact and the Mekong Partnership for the Environment (MPE), in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN) supported the First Meeting of the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).” on 28 – 29 September 2015 at the InterContinental Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting brought together 25 appointed members from government agencies and civil society organisations from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam to develop regional guidelines to improve public participation in environmental impact assessment for large-scale investment projects.
Participants developed an action plan and established operational procedures to guide efforts over the next two years. The group’s work on environmental impact assessment supports and complements a joint statement recently signed in August by regional leaders as part of the Lower Mekong Initiative, a multinational partnership among Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam and the United States to enhance regional cooperation on development challenges in the region.
